Learning About Sex

I'm reading the final report of a Philippine Center for Population and Development study that pretty much FGD'd the country to submission, asking young people about their beliefs, attitudes, perceptions, and behavior about sexuality, among others.

I'm gaining more insight into my thesis that Filipino men are the root cause of all our ills. (Disclaimer: Of course, I'm one of them.) That, perhaps, how we learn and what we learn about sex (and how we treat our partners) would shed light on the cause of our ethical (not spiritual) poverty. These thoughts, based on the study's findings, are in gestation:

1. I think parents need to talk to their kids more about sex. It's better to seize the opportunity and have them deal with sex on your terms rather than they accessing resources with conflicting or incorrect answers.

2. Virginity is so totally overrated. That's all I want to say.

3. Most adolescents know where to get an abortion, but seldom know how to employ proper birth control methods. Grabe.

4. The respondents cite pornographic material as a favorite source of information. Entertaining, yes. Informative? That's why #1 is important. Or maybe they can take this. (In fact, some respondents believe that you'll know what to do when you're there.)

5. Female respondents believed that sex is not an acceptable index of love, because sex has negative consequences. There is truth, therefore, to my old friend's adage: "There can be sex without love, but there can't be love without sex." Wait, I got confused.

6. Still on sex (yes!), the male respondents saw it as "a basically pleasurable activity that need not have anything to do with love". Okay, I'm really confused.

7. Menstruation for girls, masturbation for boys. Can you believe that those are the generally accepted adolescent markers? One, completely involutary. The other, repeatable by choice?Wet dreams, maybe: "Wala naman akong ginawa, bakit biglang nangyari yan?!?!" Actual sex was considered to be better, however.

More soon, if time permits.
