10 Questions with Serious Fictions

I'm going to babble a bit here to set this up. Serious Fictions, who I met online, was someone I should have met a long time ago. We know the same people (too many of them, frankly), but our drinks never mixed: the closest would have probably been eight years ago at 3 AM in an alley outside Orange. There she was, waiting for a cab, looking to bum a smoke from someone who was on his way to quitting.

Serious Fictions is no foamie, though. An accomplished photographer studying art in the UK, she'd much rather be dropping in on someone else's wave in Siargao. She talks to Bulletproofvest on having wine with Rizal and Sofia Coppola, freezing her ass, and making me a mix tape.

1. Describe your dream job. Be as fantastic and unbelievable as possible.

Haven’t got a ‘proper’ job, but I’ve got a dream.

I’m a photographer. I want to continue working within the visual arts. It would be fantastic if the Philippines, especially our media and advertising areas, had a more progressive visual aesthetic. We’ve got an incredibly rich and diverse culture. There’s so much talent, so much things happening in the scene. Fresh ideas, all with a different take of new Filipino design, and all very celebratory of the culture it has come from. I’d like to have the same job, but within this setting. Perhaps a different exchange rate?

2. Five people you'd like to have a beer with, living or dead. Why?

Wine na lang. Actually, let’s make it dinner, para masaya!

James Clifford, author of the seminal book the Predicament of Culture. He lives in Santa Cruz in California, and teaches the History of Consciousness. He probably grows his own. Santi Bose an amazing Filipino painter whom I never got a chance to actually hang out with properly (although I am friends with his kids.) Bob Dylan in his mid-late 20’s. The hair, the style, the voice, the old school karaoke.

Bob Dylan

Sofia Coppola- uber cool kasi masyado: Marc Jacobs muse, married to Phoenix frontman, ex ni Spike Jonze. And a surpise guest.

Eksena:

Santi and Sofia would reminisce about Apocalypse Now. James would be intrigued about the impact of Western film-making on the Cordillera highland tribes. We would talk about issues of cross-cultural exchange. At which point I ask Sofia if she’d like to try some home-made tapuey. Bob would ipod-dj and talk about a new cultural revolution. Sofia would crack open another bottle from her vineyard.

Jose Rizal would arrive with Juan Luna (who tagged along.) They survey the scene and call us burgis. Entonces, empezaron a hablar español muy deprisa.* About nation-building, of course.

3. The laziest you've ever been was...

I don’t understand. What are you trying to imply?

My Note: Not trying to imply anything. Defensive ka masyado, ha. ;-)

4. Explain "mayumi masaya".

Mayumi Masaya is the director of a film called ‘Saging at Rambutan,’ ‘Scorpio Nights 2’ (or was that Erik Matti?), and several deocologne commercials. Ms. Masaya kept a low profile after several flops in the pito-pito genre. She hasn’t been seen around lately. Last I saw her was when Lyle Sacris (director of Zsa Zsa Zaturnah) mistook her for an actress. That was outside, uh… ABG’s.

5. Four sports that you wished you were pro in. Don't mind that sentence ending in a preposition. And, explain why you wished you were pro.

Surfing- Waves. Thrills. Beach. Chill.

Pool- Sticks. Balls. Pockets. Yebah.

F1- superfastcars.

Poker- It’s the only sport that I can play better the more I drink.

6. I watched "Blue Crush", over and over again. Even rewinded some parts. It didn't get me into surfing at all. What's going to work?

Did you really watch it over and over again? Baduy mo ha. Wag ka na mag surf, dadami lang yung tao sa tubig!

7. Pick three Greek gods (or goddesses), and name their modern-day counterparts. Explain.

Parang pang lj naman ‘to!

Dionysus – uhh…Raikkonen?

Apollo –Warhol, Hirst

Eurydice- I don’t know…

My Note: Shucks, di mo pinatulan.

8. Make me a mix tape. Three musical genres, six artists, and six songs. Okay, fine, you can mix it up.

Caliph8- Provoked

Prefuse 73- Robot Snares No Cadence or Balance

Klaxons- golden skans (errol alkan mix)

Hot Chip- And I Was a Boy From School

Drip- Go

Royce-Vladimir

(link: for downloading Royce song)

that’s hip-hop, avant hip-hop, electro, electronica, trip hop

9. Where are you? And, what are you doing there?

I’m in Bournemouth, in the southwestern coast of England. Right now, I am freezing my ass off.

10. If you could meet your fate, how would you want to kick the bucket?

Happy to kick it.

Bonus question: The crappiest read ever.

I don’t remember.

Thanks to Serious Fictions.

Comments

i've never been to orange.

ok, maybe once.

*this is Mayumi's translator:

"Entonces, empezaron a hablar espaƱol muy deprisa.* ..."
--> And so....nagkastila sila; yung mabilis, halatang magaling sila at kitang-kita ang pagka-"edukaw" kamo. Siyemps, ukol daw sa mga gusali sa ating bayan. (HAHAHAHA)

i would probably invite the same people to *my* dinner, save for Marc Jacobs..i don't enjoy beef. i'd opt for Cachupoy (just for the "whutthe-?? factor. aMUSEment vs. MUSE).

And instead of Spike Jonze, i'd invite Spike Lee. Oh...and Makokay, my bestfriend from Siargao who gets drunk before anybody anywhere, anytime ;)

Kayo, Burgis...kami Insulares!
hmph! (totoo....i'm not simply tisay....)

....this is an interesting concept, BV.
