10 Questions with Drivebyshooter
I've had the good fortune of getting interviews from a whole bunch of interesting people. And, the blog's readers love it. This time, I turn the (teeny tiny) spotlight on them. Here's one reader, drivebyshooter, aka Luis Bernardo Cruz, who knows his f/stop from his focal length, and reveals that he's just your ordinary Filipino nighthawk: sleeps with his laptop, can free word associate himself to lunch, has an unhealthy desire for Coke Light, and keeps a fantasy for a robotic arm.
1. So, how does it feel, you know, drivebyshooter meets bulletproofvest. Got a kick out of it, huh?
bulletproofvest doesn't stand a chance - I do headshots. I get better results that way.
On a related note, why bulletproofvest?
2. Do some free word associations. Ready...go!
free >> unrestrained >> options >> choices >> indecision >> paralysis >> stillness >> silence >> nothing >> free >> lunch >> food >> yum >> go >> eat >> bye!
3. Do photographers get more sex? How come?
If you don't have shoots everyday and you don't follow a 9 to 5 schedule, you probably have more time to do other things. Now I ask you... do you think photographers get more sex?
4. Describe your last drink. Make it as tasty as possible.
I could see the beads of moisture forming all around her as she waited patiently. She didn't know it yet, but I was about to take her into my mouth. She gasped audibly soon after I touched her. I brought her to my lips and tasted her sweetness. Damn, I want another Coke Light.
5. Five flicks to bring a date to, a date you know you can bring home to mom. And, sequels count only as one.
- Mr. and Mrs. Smith: It's a fact - Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are both very easy on the eyes. On top of this, it shows how sexy fights can be. - the Fast and the Furious: We can take separate cars too, and race home after. If she doesn't drive, well...
- Monsters Inc., or An American Tail, or Beauty and the Beast, or... : Cartoons are great date movies, admit it. - When Harry Met Sally: This has got to be one of the best romantic comedies ever. Memorable line: "I'll have what she's having."
- Love Actually: I just like it...
Bonus: My Sassy Girl, just 'coz I like it too...
6. The eight best spots to take a picture of in Metro Manila. What are the angles? Families and L-chinned friends optional.
- Intramuros and the Manila Bay are beautiful right around sunset. The thousands of people who've taken similar pictures can't diminish the beauty of the scene. - On this note, almost any place is nice right around sunset. Even if you don't shoot the sunset, the play of lights and shadows (and you get really long shadows at this time) is very interesting. - The lobby of Medical City is very nice. I saw a kid sitting by the fountain recently, and I was looking at her from the opposite side. I had those columns of water framing her perfectly, and I saw the shot in my head. I didn't have my camera though, so I can only describe the shot. The thing is, simply because of the number of people there on any given day, scenes like that should be pretty common. - The whole stretch of EDSA should be fun. One day, I will walk from one end of EDSA to the other and shoot anything that catches my eye. I don't want to do that alone though. - Many restaurants, especially if they have tables near large windows, offer great photo ops. Do a little re-arranging and shoot your food before you eat. - Children's parties are fun to shoot. Children are not as conscious of the camera as adults are, so it's easy to capture them on film, so to speak. Parents also love seeing pictures of their kids, so seeing their smiles is nice too. - If you're not driving, try shooting from a moving car. Heck, you can try shooting while driving too. I wouldn't recommend it to everybody, but I know I've gotten some interesting results. - Anywhere and everywhere - just keep your eyes open.
7. Send a picture of your desk -- the one you're reading this off now. Annotate.
Drivebyshooter's desk/bedroom.
- on my bed - my phones and my wallet are on it just outside the frame. - on the table (can't really call it a desk): my laptop, a box of notepad, an empty pen holder (who took all my pens?), Altec Lansing speakers (with the sub under the table), an external HDD in between the satellites, a pair of earphones
- on the little bench beside my bed: mouse and mousepad, eye covers (I'm not a morning person), the remote for my A/C,
- on / near the couch: my half-open camera bag, a shirt and a hand towel still not packed away, my laptop bag (on the edge of the frame), my gym bag with contents strewn on the floor
8. Complete the sentence: "I'll give up my left arm for..."
... a robotic arm with modular attachments. I can't remember which cartoon super-villain has this.
I'm such a geek...
9. Share five tips to becoming a good, employable photographer in the Philippines.
- Keep your eyes open. This doesn't necessarily make you employable, it makes you a good photographer. There's always something worth shooting - something not everybody can see. - Shoot as much as you can. As long as it doesn't involve anything illegal, take on any job that goes your way. You need to be seen in order to get noticed. The practice helps too. - Assist or work back-up to other photographers. This gets you gigs you otherwise wouldn't get, which in turn helps you build your folio. On top of this, you pick lessons from another, more experienced photographer - not just on photography per se, but also on how the industry works. - The cliche is true - the customer is always right. You're not taking photos for yourself, but for your client. Give 'em what they want. - Don't be late. Few things will piss of clients faster than this.
10. Why there's still hope for the Philippines.
I know that there are enough people who genuinely care about our country to help her get out of the rut she's in. I can't explain how I know this, but I just do. Heck, I can't even cite much to back up that claim. Call it faith if you must, but I just know there's still hope for the Philippines.
Bonus question: What is it with you and sleep?
Sleep is my mistress. I make time for her every so often, but she is not my priority, nor do I see her regularly. There are times, however, when I simply cannot resist her charms - and she takes over me completely.
