Top Ten Scientific Hoaxes of All Time

The Guardian has an interesting read on some of its favorite (most convincing?) scams of science. Number one is the Piltdown man, second are:

In 1971 Manuel Elizalde, a Philippine government minister, discovered a small stone age tribe living in utter isolation on the island of Mindanao. These people, the Tasaday, spoke a strange language, gathered wild food, used stone tools, lived in caves, wore leaves for clothes, and settled matters by gentle persuasion. They made love, not war, and became icons of innocence; reminders of a vanished Eden.
Anyone out there know a supposed former Tasaday poser?

I don't know any poseurs out here but, it's interesting to note that Jessica Hagedorn's new book, Dream Jungle, has for one of its main characters a man who fits Elizalde to a T. Tasadays episode included.

i read jessica's book too. intrigued by the tasadays, i googled about the tasadays, and according to tasaday.com, some local journalist bribed two teenage tasadays to claim that everything was a hoax....for two sticks of yosi.

What I'd like to know is how does one think up a hoax like this? I mean, if you have this on your list of options, then, by george, you can think of a hoax for just about anything! Why stone age people? Was he an anthropologist? Did he want to create some sort of cult that turned itself upside down when they realized that they can make money out of it? Fascinating behavior.

like this hoaw is stupid..Why would people make up such hoax?
especially the naked part. Alizalde gave them money to get naked! Like i mean it's sick. And they had to eat tadpoles! LOL (laugh out loud)

How are you?I am fine.
